George N Mtonga wrote, "In the scholarship of law, justice as a theory means the maximization of punishment for those who have committed the crime. AND not those who happen to be similarly situated as the people who have committed the crime. While I have expressed my disdain for riots and vandalizing of property, the large issue is the burden that has placed on innocent students who had the intention of graduating this year and subsequently pursue graduate and employment opportunities. One of my mentees, has been hoping to graduate so that he can start working to help his family. He was not part of the riots, another one just went back to Kabushi Constituency and i had to give him piece work to make sure he does not involve himself with a bad crowd.
There are stories to these students. They need our understanding and subsequent advise to be better. Above all the underlying reasons for the riots should be addressed. You may be against slaves rebelling and killing their masters, as a matter of law it is wrong and illegal. But this approach escapes the underlying issue of freedom. The genesis of slave rebellions was the enslavement of blacks in the south. Once the blackman and woman regained their freedom, the very concept of a slave rebellion ceased.
I would advise that the administrators at UNZA do not passingly look at this situation as an attempt by misdirected students to gain attention, take this time to genuinely engage the students and WORK together to make CBU and UNZA the factory of intellectual prowess in Zambia. YOU do not only delay the students, but you also delay the progress of the country."
